The South Island’s top show jumping combinations are heading to Mosgiel this weekend for the South Island Show Jumping Championships.
Attracting more than 250 horses from all over the island, the show will be the largest hosted by the Otago Area ESNZ. It is the first three star show of the South Island show jumping season.
The premier event of the two day show will be the Bomac Super League Horse Grand Prix, scheduled to go after lunch on Sunday afternoon. Despite only attracting the two starters, it is expected to be a tough competition with combinations getting their first look at a three-star 1.60m championship this season designed by international course designer Kevin Hansen of Hawke’s Bay.
The one star Cathay Pacific Grand Prix has attracted eight starters and features many up and coming combinations. Leading the charge will be Burnham’s Ross Smith who has both his talented imported stallions Quite Cassini and Ajardo entered. He will face some stiff opposition though from the in form young riders including Christchurch combinations Brad Cunningham on Cheltenham, Tegan Fitzsimon on Alacazam MH, Emma Power on Longridge Maverick, Stacey Anderson on Saddlery Barn Cruiser, and Samantha Peters on Rhythm, all of who will start in the Mitavite South Island Young Rider series class also. Chris Harris also has the smart mare Lindis Lara entered.
One of the most exciting classes of the weekend is likely to be the Pony Grand Prix which has attracted nine of the South Island’s leading pony combinations. It has been a tight tussle between the ponies all season with combinations vying for vital series points. Starters include Ashburton’s Lucinda Askin aboard Totem, coming in off the back of a good win at Waimate last weekend, and Olivia Robertson on Mr Black Magic, who were winners at Ashburton on January 15. The ever consistent Becky Harkerss (Leeston) also has Brooklee Smallchange entered, and Southland’s Nicole White will start Cuban Connoisseur.
Following on from the success of last year, when the event was hosted by Southland Area ESNZ, there is also a South Island Open Horse Speed Championship run over 1.15-1.20m, which will be the first class in ring one on Sunday morning. Run against the clock, the event is a crowd pleaser and has attracted an impressive 29 entries.
The other national series classes including the KiwiSpan Junior Rider, IverQuantel Amateur Rider and dedicated age group classes are also well supported. Show hunter also has its day at the championships and has attracted strong entries.
Competition gets underway at 8.30am each day, going through to early evening. On Saturday night there is also a dinner with guest speaker Arnaud Evain, highly regarded French breeder and head of the FENCES auction sales.
Event secretary Emma Barker said the committee was thrilled with the support it had received from riders. It was also indebted to its sponsors, especially Dallens Leathers, who has been a long-time supporter of its events, and volunteers, whom without the event couldn’t go ahead.
She said the ground conditions were perfect. The committee is hoping for fine weather, with the scheduled rain on Saturday to stay away.
